Hello from Redbird Arena where the two ISUs meet at 7:05 tonight. The Redbirds are coming off their first Valley win Sunday at SIU that broke a six-game losing streak. ISU has a chance to get some momentum going in the next two weeks, but first need to win this game. It won't be easy. Ready for your questions...
There will be a moment of silence before tonight's tip-off in memory of Jack Currin. The long-time ISU supporter, known as "Jumbo" to everyone, passed away last night. Black sweatbands inscribed with "Jumbo" were anonymously donated. ISU players can't wear them, per NCAA rules.
Very easy. The Redbirds made some shots, specifically Tyler Brown. That carried over to the defensive end where the Redbirds were very good in the first half. ISU got a little shaky in the second half before righting things and pulling away.
There will be a moment of silence before the national anthem and they will, I think, be passing out sweatbands inscribed with "Jumbo" to some fans. Jumbo was the ultimate super fan and his presence at Redbird Arena will be missed by all. I got a note the other day from Tim Jankovich, who was close with Jumbo, who said he enjoyed Randy Kindred's Sunday column on Jumbo.
Starters aren't released until 10 min before game but I would think so. Why change what worked on Sunday?
I'm not exactly sure who might be getting them, T-dog. It could be everyone. I will try to find out.
Definitely agree, Redbird Kyle. This is really a huge game tonight for ISU to keep the momentum going. We all know that Evansville is usually a tough match-up for the Redbirds.
Because he started on Sunday and they won.
You would think so. Anthony Cousin said there was a lot of positive energy in the locker room after the game. Jackie Carmichael said the monkey was off the Redbirds' backs. ISU can play without the pressure of having to snap a losing streak.
I was just telling someone I'm not sure who on ISU is going to guard Ryan. If it's Tyler Brown, you take away a lot of his energy running around all those screens on defense. If it's Bryant Allen, he's giving up about 5 inches. It might be Johnny Hill. That would be my guess to start on him. That guy makes a living going to the free throw line. Johnny might foul out by halftime.
I think ISU (the Redbirds) pulled it out in a squeaker.
Hey Buckeye Girl. This is going to be a tough one tonight. Indiana State is pretty good. Odum is best PG in league and really directs that team.
I asked Muller about that the other day and he said they will really start to work on it after the season. I still hear they will be going to Puerta Valerta (?), a tourney like South Padre where they have two home games and two in Mexico. Haven't heard the other teams.... For Redbird Kyle, I am Artis Gilmore (get it?)
I definitely think Johnny will start on Odum. Bryant Allen also will get a shot at him, as will Kaza and maybe even Anthony Cousin. Hill probably the best option because of his height.
What number did Artis Gilmore wear (9 more than Johnny Hill).
For those at Redbird Arena, in the seats behind the basket that ISU is shooting at is former Illini coach Lou Henson.
I definitely see this coaching staff staying together. Dana is not only associate coach, but is the recruiting coordinator. Muller and Judson also do some recruiting, but it seems Ford and Ward are the two main guys.
That's a good question. Hard to tell. Kaza has hit the wall a little bit, but that happens to all freshmen. He will be much improved next year. I could see Johnny playing a lot of the 2 spot next year, but he needs to develop a consistent outside jumper.
ISU starters are Brown, Allen, Carmichael, Wilkins and Hill. Same as at SIU.
The Jumbo wristbands were being handed out in the Redbird Room and to season ticketholders, so I'm told.
Creighton is better than Wichita State and should win the league. But the Shockers will definitely make the NCAA tourney. The Valley needs someone else besides those two to win in St. Louis to get three bids. I just don't see Indiana State going 13-5 or 12-6 in league and getting far enough in St. Louis to earn an at-large.
I just saw that, Redbird Kyle. Yikes ... but Miami was missing one of its best players in Hawaii, for what that is worth. Plus, ISU nearly stole that game in Terre Haute when the Redbirds didn't play all that well.
Gotta go.Enjoy game. Be back at 6:30 p.m. Saturday before facing Evansville.
